Day 1 - Journey Begins

Columbia, MD to Delaware State Park, Delaware Lake, OH

--Sideling Hill, Maryland

Previous cross country trips have started along the same Route 32 to Rt 70 west, it brings back vivid memories of my first solo road trip out west to Colorado at age 17.

--Looking back East through the haze from the top of Sideling Hill.

Sideling Hill is a symbolic gateway to the West, looking back Eastward at Maryland through the haze below it feels like freedom to breathe and move about. A few miles further to the West the Continental Divide is hardly noticeable as a geographic feature except for the sign but is a definite grounding departure from the East Coast.

--East Coast border crossing. No guards. The fools!

The interstate through West VA and OH is in the dark and goes by quickly, there are lots of trucks and I miss not having a CB Radio but I am well entertained with an XM Radio fictional radio play about alien abductions of astronauts and an epic 6 hour BBC history of the Rolling Stones. Passing through the multi-laned and well lit but empty beltway of Columbus I find Delaware State Park, OH around 12:30am and make camp crawling into the back of the truck at parking pad #25.
